‘Cut-and-Paste Job’: Owaisi Attacks Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code

Jaipur, September 7: AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has criticised the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) implemented in Uttarakhand, calling it a “cut-and-paste” law and questioning its application in a diverse country like India.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to Jaipur, Owaisi alleged that the Uttarakhand UCC retains provisions from existing Hindu personal laws, including laws related to marriage, succession and divorce. He also questioned the exemption given to tribal communities.
 
“If India is a country of diversity and pluralism, how can laws governing marriage, divorce and succession of one community be imposed on another?” Owaisi said.
 
He accused the BJP of ignoring the constitutional principles of diversity, pluralism and freedom of religion.
The Uttarakhand government, however, has maintained that the UCC is aimed at ensuring equality in civil rights, protecting women's and children's rights and simplifying legal procedures.
 
 
 
Earlier this year, the Uttarakhand government brought the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, after it received approval from Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.). The ordinance introduced procedural, administrative and penal changes to improve the implementation of the UCC.
 
The UCC in Uttarakhand has remained a politically sensitive issue since its introduction, with supporters describing it as a step towards equal civil laws and critics raising concerns over its impact on personal and religious practices.
Owaisi was in Jaipur ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections in Rajasthan. He said AIMIM would focus on strengthening its organisation at the grassroots level and working for the party’s candidates.

The urban local body polls in Rajasthan are scheduled for September 9 and 11. The elections are being seen as an important test for political parties and their organisational strength at the local level.
 
Owaisi’s remarks on the Uttarakhand UCC are likely to add another political dimension to the ongoing debate over the implementation of a common set of civil laws across India.
