Pune, Jan 29: “Reservation is necessary but equally important is its honest implementation”, said Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohanrav Bhagwat here on Thursday.
He was interacting with students at a programme ‘Indian Students’ Parliament’ held at MIT college here on Thursday. Noted scientist Dr Vijay Bhatkar, MIT founder Vishwanath Karad and director Rahul Karad were present on the dais.
Dr Bhagwat said that reservation was necessary and it should be implemented with honesty. There is no dispute regarding this with Constitution. But the implementation must be honest. It is not advisable to interpret Constitution the way one likes, he added.
The RSS Chief favoured continuance of quota policy so long as there is social discrimination in the country, but stressed on its honest implementation.
In response to a question on politics based on religion, Dr Bhagwat said, “This is not a question for me. This should be asked to those who indulge in it. We should practise what we preach and embrace the good”.
He said that culture is the soul of Indian Constitution, which has the provision for effecting necessary changes in accordance with the changing times.
He said that the constitution of Pakistan was based on one religion and community and has no scope for tolerance and acceptance of diversity. On the contrary the Indian Constitution was accepted by all and was formed on the basis of consensus. India always accepted and honoured diversity because seeing unity in diversity is our value and satatana dharma, he added.
In 1976 two words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ were added to the preamble of our constitution, he said adding tolerance and acceptance are embedded in our culture.
Reiterating the resolve that Ram temple must be built at Ayodhya, Bhagwat said that it was a question of belief and ideal of the country. Ram is our cultural ideal, he added.
When a student asked him whether the poor would get two square meals once the Ram Mandir was built, he retorted posing a counter: “Have rotis came to them till now when it has still not been constutcted?” He said that Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Rama who is the very embodiment of Indian culture. His temple must be constructed at that very place, he added.
