Polavaram project underway; Set to complete by 2019 aims to end the drought problem

Hyderabad, December 31:Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed confidence that the project would be dedicated to the nation by the year 2019 and spillway works by the end of 2017 while laying foundation stone for spillway works of multi-purpose Polavaram project on Friday.
Some 101 veda pandithas performed yagam at the Polavaraam project site on the occasion of commencing the Spillway Concrete works. He even administered to them a pledge to that effect. He said the drought problem in the State would end after the completion of the Polavaram project. The Polavaram is like a Varam (Fortune) to Andhra people, he said.Embeded Object

Naidu recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held his first cabinet meeting on this issue and merged the villages into Andhra Pradesh, saying that a strong foundation was laid by himself with the cooperation of the PM, for Polavaram.Embeded Object

There had been many efforts by leaders, engineers and even the British government to construct Polavaram and were not fruitful enough, he said. He said about 3,000 TMC water has been going into the Sea without use, from Godavari River every year.

Naidu said he had visited the project area 12 times, and has been organising virtual inspections and review meetings held on every Monday adding that Godavari water was brought to Krishna River through Pattiseema project on the occasion of Krishna Pushkaralu. He thanked the Centre for reimbursing the Rs. 1,981 crore spent by Andhra Pradesh, in the form of the cheque presented by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Rs 8,682 crore has been spent on this project till now, and the central government released Rs 1,981 crore through Nabard, Naidu said adding that more funds are required for completing the project. The concrete work of Spillway would be completed by the end of December, 2018, Naidu said adding that the government aims to complete the project by 2019.
