BOOK REVIEW: ‘Narendra Damodardas Modi the making of a legend’

The Coffee Table Book, “Narendra Damodardas Modi: The Making of a Legend,” is a riveting illustrated biography of the iconic leader that brings alive his life journey from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of leading the country into the modern era.

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” this iconic thought of Mahatma Gandhi most aptly highlights the necessity of a leader emerging as a role model for the people of his country. The culture of a nation draws significantly from the behaviour of its leaders, hence, the need for the leaders to set a good example by maintaining the highest standard of propriety and behaviour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one such leader of modern India who serves as a role model and inspiration for the country, especially the youth.

The book meticulously elucidates the thoughts, the ideology, the vision and the charisma of the extraordinary leader while also touching upon the dreams, the struggles, trial and tribulations that led to his emergence as the prime minister of the world’s largest democracy.

The message that comes out in the book, especially so for the youth of the country, is that democratic India provides all opportunities to dream and to aspire for the skies. What is required is selfless commitment and self-confidence.

The 317 page Coffee Table Book comprises of nine chapters. It begins with a brief on the early life in humble surroundings of the protagonist where he learns the basic values from his parents and teachers; such values that have stayed with him throughout his life.

The second chapter covers a very important phase in the life of the protagonist where he embarks on a journey of self-realisation and finally finds his moorings in the selfless national service ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The political journey of the protagonist is covered by elucidating his courage in facing the challenge posed by the declaration of emergency in the country in 1975, and his onward growth in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

His contribution to the development of Gujarat as chief minister that has been instrumental for his recognition as a leader par excellence finds empirical and lucid treatment in the book.

The portion covering the  journey of the protagonist to the office of the prime minister gives to the reader a comprehensive insight into the historical course of events that led to his nomination as the prime ministerial candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the new age election campaign that changed the dynamics of elections in political of democracies worldwide.

The protagonist as prime minister is “work in progress” and value judgement on the same would be premature, nevertheless, the book touches on the many initiatives that have been taken by the NDA government to fructify the vision of the prime minister. It also covers in great detail his inspirational contact with the global leadership that is building a magnificent image of the country on the world stage. 

The book has been produced by the Sulabh International Social Service Organisation under the direction of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak.

The biography has been compiled and written by Colonel (Retired) Jaibans Singh.

It is a must read for the younger aspiring generation of the country and the world at large.
