Odisha soon to set up ‘Sports City’ with an aim to become the ‘Sports Powerhouse’

Bhubaneswar, August 31: To mark the National Sports day, Odisha government planning to set up ‘Sports City’ in Bhubaneswar with world-class infrastructure. Integrated sports complexes have also been planned to be established in major cities of Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur, Rourkela and Jeypore with an initial outlay of Rs 96 Crore under SWARNA scheme. 

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced about this new ‘Sports City’ while conferring Biju Patnaik Sports Award at a function. Further, he said an additional funding of Rs 15 lakh each would be provided to 150 block-level mini stadiums to develop them as Krida Vikash Kendras. The CM congratulated all the distinguished awardees on their achievements in the fields of sports and social service.


Hosting the Asian Athletics Championship has catalyzed the emergence of Odisha as a sports powerhouse in the making, added Patnaik.

Six sportspeople with the disability were given cash prizes in the Outstanding Sportspersons category. Pramod Bhagat (Para Badminton), Jayanti Behera (Para Athletics), Rajesh Meher (Special Olympics), Jafar Iqbal and Sukhram Majhi (Blind Cricket) were the awardees. Dipsan Tirkey, G.Narahari, Bonita Lakra and Bignaraj Miridia were also awarded in the same category. The State Award for Social Service was also conferred on social activist Meera Parida, Dinesh Kumar Mallick, Manoj Kumar Dani, Jhasaketan Ranaj, Gracy Mol Singh and Chinmaya Kumar Bebarta.
