Ranchi, February 2: The first day of e-way bill system that came into force on Thursday proved tough for traders in the state as they faced several problems in generating the document that is now a must for transporting goods. The problems were faced in Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and in other few states too.

Due to this problem, the government authorities have extended the trial period for the e-way bill. "In view of difficulties faced by the trade in generating e-way bill due to initial tech glitches, it has been decided to extend the trial phase for generation of the e-way bill, both for inter and intra-State movement of goods. It shall be made compulsory from a date to be announced," said a Government tweet.

E-way bill became mandatory from Thursday but throughout the day there have reports of the platform crashing. Some companies have complained that moving goods had come to a complete standstill. As long as the portal does not start properly, any officer of the department e-way bill won’t take any action against the merchants about the bill.

The trial period of E-way bill had started on January 15.

Background:

Under GST, the process and procedural aspects of the movement of goods are prescribed in the e-way bill rules. E-way bill stands for Electronic Way Bill. It is usually a unique bill number generated for the specific consignment involving the movement of goods.

E-Way Bill is an electronic way bill for movement of goods which can be generated on the e-Way Bill Portal. Transport of goods of more than Rs. 50,000 in value in a vehicle cannot be made by a registered person without an e-way bill.

E-way bill can also be generated or canceled through SMS.

When an e-way bill is generated a unique e-way bill number (EBN) is allocated and is available to the supplier, recipient, and the transporter.
