Mumbai, March 29: Central and Western Railway has kept their words to switch all the stations to LED lights and save energy by March 31. All 1,158 stations on the Central and Western railway have switched to LED lights.

The Railways had announced last year that it was actively working to provide 100 percent LED lighting for energy needs in railway staff colonies, stations, and platforms. Also, it had directed to fit LED lights in the residential quarters too.

WR chief spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar said, "The initiative to convert all conventional light fittings to 100% LED lightings at 726 stations on WR has been taken to reduce the carbon footprint."

With 426 stations, the five zones of Central Railway viz. Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Solapur, and Bhusaval will save 69.38 lakh units annually by fitting LED lights which will ultimately save Rs 5.32 crore of the railways.

Whereas five zones of Western Railway with 726 stations Viz. Mumbai Central, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot and Bhavnagar will save 68.30 lakh units annually saving 5 Cr.

By March 26, all stations on the Western and Central railway, including the ones on Mumbai’s suburban rail network, have switched from conventional lights to LED lights.

Before March 31, both Central and Western railways are planning to fit LED lights in all railways coaches, workshops, residential quarters, other offices and stations to LED lights.
