Doha, July 28: Amidst intensified Gulf crisis, Qatar has moved on from the economic blockade put by Arab quartet and is all set to host the 2022 Football World Cup as it. Notably, Arab quartet including Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have cut off ties with Qatar and have put the stringent economic sanctions on Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorism and sowing discord in the region.

In a televised interview, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Lolwah al-Khater said that her country and its plan to host the 2022 Football World Cup had not been affected by its yearlong diplomatic standoff and economic blockade by Arab quartet led by Saudi Arabia.

Lolwah al-Khater said, “We marked the embargo’s anniversary a few weeks ago and we have generally moved beyond the blockade phase.” She further asserted that Qatar was now in the process of forging long-term relationships and strategic partnerships with a number of countries.

“Qatar has concluded several international agreements that will enhance its presence in the fields of electronic security and investment," al-Khater added. On the occasion, she also praised Kuwaiti mediation efforts, but said little progress had been made in this regard.

Al-Khater, in the end, called on Riyadh to deal with anti-Qatar hate speech in its media which posed a concern for the safety of Qatari nationals in Saudi Arabia. “There is no diplomatic representation by which the State of Qatar can deal with the affairs of Qatari pilgrims,” al-Khater concluded.

The statement comes within a month after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reiterated that unless and until Qatar fulfills 13 demands announced by Arab quartet, there would be no starting point for any meaningful negotiations.

In the month of June last year, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and several other nations cut ties with Qatar and imposed stringent economic sanctions on it over supporting extremism. On the other side, Qatar denied all their allegations saying that they never supported Islamist militants and Shi'ite Iran. Later, Saudi and its allies issued a 13-point list of demands to end the rift on June 22 and gave Qatar 10 days to comply. However, earlier Qatar rejected to fulfill the demands.
