Pennsylvania, August 18: The sins of priests and Bishops are coming out one after the other. These priests and Bishops are committing serious crimes including sexual assault, blackmailing etc rather serving the message of ‘God’ to the people. The shocking exposition this time comes from Pennsylvania, United States where at least 300 priests are accused of child sex abuse by more than 1,000 victims throughout the country.
Notably, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on August 14 revealed a report in the public of an investigation done by state Attorney General Josh Shapiro into Catholic clerical sex abuse of minors in the United States that said 301 priests are accused of child sex abuse by more than 1,000 victims throughout the country.
The report that covered six of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses and found more than 1,000 identifiable victims also added that there are likely thousands more victims whose records were lost or who were too afraid to come forward.
The report also catalogs number of horrific instances of abuse including, “A priest who raped a young girl in the hospital after she had her tonsils out; a victim tied up and whipped with leather straps by a priest; and another priest who was allowed to stay in ministry after impregnating a young girl and arranging for her to have an abortion.”
Meanwhile, the Vatican has expressed "shame and sorrow" in its first response to a groundbreaking US Grand Jury report detailing decades of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis said he understands how "these crimes can shake the faith and spirit of believers," vowing to "root out this tragic horror."
The revelation comes months after several instances of abuse by Priests and Bishops came in light in several countries including India, Australia etc.
A 44-year-old nun staying in a convent in Kerala's Kuruvilangad has made a police complaint in June this year claiming that Bishop Mulakkal had physically assaulted her. According to the complaint of nun, Franco Mulakkal, who is a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her 14 times.
Nun, who belongs to an institution that functions under the Jalandhar diocese lodged a complaint before the Kottayam district police chief Harisankar. According to the nun, she had earlier complained about the incident to the Church authorities but no action was taken. However, she was forced to move a police complaint after the Church took no action on her complaint.
An Australian court in July this year convicted Archbishop Philip Wilson of Adelaide for covering up child sex abuse and sentenced an imprisonment for one year.
