New Delhi, Jan 1: Today is DRDO day. Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO was established in 1958 with just 10 laboratories to enhance the research work in the defence sector.

Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production with the Defence Science Organisation. It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence headquartered in New Delhi.

The organisation includes around 5,000 scientists belonging to the Defence Research & Development Service (DRDS) and about 25,000 other scientific, technical and supporting personnel.

In the new year, DRDO will test weapons systems for the Su-30, MiG 29 and its smart anti-airfield weapon which had a 100 per cent success rate in 2018. The DRDP will also test ballistic missiles for the Navy.

The year just went by saw systems designed by DRDO’s laboratories in New Delhi enjoy a high success rate. These included the Agni-V, BrahMos with indigenous target seekers, light anti-tank missile (MPTAGM).

Nag, the anti-tank guided missile, is all set to be inducted into the Army. It can attack enemy tanks from the top and the front and can pierce through reactive and composite armour.

In the field of computing, DRDO has worked extensively on high-speed computing given its ramifications for most of its defence projects. These include supercomputers for computational flow dynamics, to dedicated microprocessor designs manufactured in India for flight controllers and the like, to high-speed computing boards built around Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components, similar to the latest trends in the defence industry.
