Hyderabad, December 7: The entire nation lauded and sighed when the Telangana Police released the news of the encounter of the four accused in Priyanka Reddy rape and murder case. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in this regard, has taken suo motu cognizance of news reports and are now visiting the spot where the encounter had taken place. However, there are many reports questioning the action of the Telangana Police of how law and order has been misused. Understanding and respecting the rightful duties of Telangana Police, the NHRC should not distrust the action taken and also should not succumb to media propaganda maligning the actions of the police.

In a statement given by the NHRC, it stated, “The commission is of the opinion that this matter is required to be probed very carefully. Accordingly, it has asked its Director General (Investigation) to immediately send a team for a fact finding on the spot investigation into the matter.” It further added, “The deceased had been arrested by the police during investigation and a judgment in the matter by the competent court was yet to be pronounced. If, the arrested persons were actually guilty, they were to be punished as per law pursuant to the directions of the competent court.”

Some section of the media and some so-called ‘liberal’, urban naxals have come out in open talking about the incident and commenting that the Telangana Police should not have taken such action against the four accused. NHRC, being a human rights organisation should not fall succumb to these misleading ideas of these ‘liberal’ thinking. Rape and Murder is a crime and the actions taken by the Telangana Police comes with the need of the hour. The Human Rights body should not be distrusting the actions taken by the police only for the reason because of some media organisations questioning the act.

The team of the Investigation Division of the Commission headed by an SSP have reached Telangana this morning and will first visit the place where the encounter had taken place. After visiting the spot, they will visit, Mahbubnagar Govt hospital where the bodies of the four accused are kept. The Commission asserted that the right to life and equality before the law are the basic human rights recognised and granted by the Constitution.

The four accused were under arrest and in judicial custody. They were lodged in high-security cells at Cherlapally Central Jail in Hyderabad. Police said that the veterinarian was brutally raped and killed by the accused who later burned her body in the Shamshabad area on November 27. Her charred body was recovered on November 28.
