March 12: One of India’s hugely applauded freedom fighter and Congress politician Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s life story is all set to be made into a mega web series. The series will be based on internationally acclaimed author Hindol Sengupta’s book ‘The Man Who Saved India’.

Sunil Bohra and Shailesh R. Singh, the makers of Gangs of Wasseypur and Tanu Weds Manu, are collaborating with India’s largest English-language trade publisher, Penguin Random House India for the biopic of the Iron Man, Sardar Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister of India.

The show will tackle key incidents in Sardar Patel’s life with a well-rounded perspective on his life. "The web series will follow how Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel becomes one of the most crucial figures of Indian politics”, said Bohra in a statement.

“Patel begins as an ordinary young man from Gujarat with minimal education, who later aces the toughest British law exams. Upon his return to India from Britain, he resigns from his job at the beckoning of Mahatma Gandhi, and joins India's fight for independence. This is how Patel ultimately earns the title of 'Sardar from the father of the nation, himself”, he further added.

“This is one such story which is truly larger than life and I believe that Sunil is the right person to give this story the visual mounting that it requires and the distribution muscle that it can enthral a new generation around the world as the story of Gandhi once did”, Hindol Sengupta stated.

Sardar Patel, the lawyer-turned-Congress party leader served as India’s Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister until his death in 1950. Previously, a biopic by Ketan Mehta titled ‘Sardar’ and starring Paresh Rawal was made.

In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the ‘Statue of Unity’, world’s tallest statue, in Gujarat in honour of Sardar Patel as a tribute on his 143rd birth anniversary.
