March 23: With everyone turning into a ‘chowkidar’ to protect our country these days, let’s take a moment to remember those ‘chowkidars’ without whom we would never have been able to be the ‘chowkidars’ of this free nation.

March 23 is marking one of the five ‘Shaheed Diwas’ or ‘Martyrs Day’ that are celebrated in India. The anniversary of the deaths of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru on 23 March 1931, in Lahore (Pakistan), is declared to be Martyr's Day.

Today marks the 88th martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, the three revolutionary heroes in India’s freedom struggle who were hanged by the British Raj for their alleged involvement in the killing of John Saunders.

The trio mistook John for Superintendent James Scott, who was the brain behind the lathi charge against Lala Lajpat Rai and his followers, who were protesting against the Simon Commission.

With the Lok Sabha elections only on the edge, it probably is the best time to remember the journey of India becoming the biggest democracy in the world and the legends who sacrificed their lives to make India a free nation.

With all the respect to these ‘sons of India’, all proud Indians took to twitter hailing them on the occasion of Marty’s Day and are flooding twitter with tweets paying tributes to the trio Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.
