Australian Academy of Science announced honorific awards for Pioneers in research

Canberra, March 3: Every Indian is proud that a scientist with Indian origin, Chennupati Jagadish has received Honorific Award 2019 for his outstanding performance in recently announced as the Thomas Ranken Lyle Medallist for his pioneering contributions in semiconductor physics.

The Australian Academy of Science promotes international scientific engagement, builds public awareness and understanding of science, and champions, celebrates and supports excellence in Australian science.

Chennupati Jagadish AC, an Indian-Australian physicist and academic, is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at the Australian National University Research School of Physics and Engineering.

He is head of the Semiconductor Optoelectronics and Nanotechnology Group which he established in 1990. He is the Convener of the Australian Nanotechnology Network and Director of Australian National Fabrication Facility ACT Node.

Jagadish obtained his BSc degree in Physics from Acharya Nagarjuna University (VSR College, Tenali) in 1977, MSc(Tech) Applied Physics (Electronics) degree from Andhra University in 1980 and MPhil and PhD degrees in Physics (Semiconducting thin films) from the University of Delhi in 1982 and 1986, He moved to the Australian National University in 1990 to join the newly established Department of Electronic Materials Engineering in the Research School of Physics and Engineering.

The Nancy Millis Medal for Women in Science honours the late Prof Nancy Millis AC MBE FAA FTSE & her importance as a role model for Women In Science.

Prof Jacqueline Batley of ScienceUWA was last week announced the 2019 Nancy Millis Medallist for Women in Science by Science Academy for her contributions to our understanding of the genetics of crops such as canola, wheat & lentils

Protecting crops from disease is crucial for food sources so Professor Jacqueline is using science to help this problem. We use DNA to identify resistance genes which makes one plant resistant and not get disease and other plant susceptible if they don’t have the gene. Her research has increased crop yield of Canola, Wheat, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

Dr Daniel Falster adaptive plant from UNSW Sydney was earlier this week announced the 2019 Fenner Medallist by Science Academy for his research into understanding and modelling forest ecosystem dynamics
