Huntington, April 18: Indian culture is rich in case of spicy food; though we have a different culture in different states, in almost all spices we use chili as in green fresh form or dried chilies. Now, a new study has found that the spice can help slow the spread of lung cancer that often metastasises to other secondary locations like the bone, brain or liver. A new study shows natural compound capsaicin from chili peppers can halt the growth of cancer cells mainly in lung cancer.

“Our study suggests that the natural compound capsaicin from chili peppers could represent a novel therapy to combat metastasis in lung cancer patients,” said Jamie Friedman, a doctoral candidate who performed the research in the laboratory of Piyali Dasgupta, Ph.D., at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

What is metastasizes?

Metastasis means that cancer spreads to a different body part from where it started. Metastases can also sometimes develop when cancer cells from the main tumor, typically in the belly, or abdominal cavity, break off and grow in nearby areas, such as in the liver, lungs, or bones. Any type of cancer can spread. Whether this happens depends on several factors

Lung cancer is considered to be the leading cause of cancer death for both men and women. Most deaths linked to cancer occur when the cancer cells spread to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis.

In their experiments, which included three lines of cultured human non-small cell lung cancer cells, the researchers found that capsaicin inhibited the first step of metastastic process, which is called ‘invasion’. They also observed that mice with lung cancer that ate a diet enhanced with capsaicin showed smaller areas of metastatic cancer cells in their lungs compared with mice not receiving the treatments.

Chili peppers are linked to a number of health benefits - such as lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, boosting immunity, and aiding in weight loss and many more benefits. According to new research, chili pepper contains a nutritional compound that can successfully prevent the spread of lung cancer. The researchers found that capsaicin, the chemical compound that gives chili peppers their pungent flavour, stopped lung cancer metastasis in rodents and cultured human cell lines.
