Guwahati, May 21: The very first day of the Second India International Open Tournament in Guwahati was a delighting one for India. All Seven Indian Pugilists won their preliminary bouts on the opening day yesterday.
The five-day boxing tournament kicked off yesterday in Guwahati. On Indian side, the 2016 World Championship silver medalist Sonia Lather (57kg) and Asian Championship Bronze medalist Manisha Maun (57kg) led the charge in the women’s section.
Preeti Beniwal (60kg) won over Nepal’s Sangita Sunar by 5-0 and Jyoti in the same category bagged 4-1 win against Irish Ardiente Mango. The youth world Champion Shashi Chopra defeated Tandin Choden in Bhutan. Anamika from the 51kg group defeated Claundine Decena Veloso of Philippines.
Sachin Siwach, former youth world champion (52kg) secured a flawless 5-0 win over Raman Nicanor of Argentina.
Boxing Maestro Mary Kom will start her campaign today in 51kg. Two Indians – Nikhant Zareen and Anamika will face each other in the same category. In the 64kg category, local girl Ankushita Boro will play against Lalita. In Mens category, Ankit and manjeet Panghal will play their matches in 60kg and 75kg category respectively.
Six men and four Indian women boxers are already confirmed of a medal each entering the semi-finals straightway because of the smaller size of the draw.
Brijesh Yadav, Sanjay, Naman Tanvar, Sanjeet, Satish Kumar, and Atul Thakur are in the semi-finals. In women’s, Lovlina Borgohain and Bhgayabati Kachari along with Anjali and Saweety are through to the last four.
