New Delhi, May 7: Food is not just the basic need of human but also the most important substance for defining many things like culture and habits. but now you can eat without worrying about nutritious values or any other factors! Because Indian scientists developed nutritious ‘colored’ what varieties.
As per the recent reports, Indian scientists at National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) have developed colored wheat varieties which are packed with higher nutrition than ‘normal’ amber wheat, which will soon available in Indian markets.
The technology was pioneered by the agricultural biotechnologists led by Monika Garg at the NABI.
NABI, which is under the administrative control of Department of Biotechnology, has already signed agreements with various companies for technology allocation.
Besides anthocyanins, the varieties also pack in relatively higher levels of proteins and essential micronutrients such as zinc. The antioxidants present may also help prevent aging, obesity, and diabetes. These unusual wheat varieties obtain their color from natural antioxidants abundantly present in fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, and jamun.
On this occasion, Monika Garg said, “We have not released them for individual farmers as they may find it difficult to sell them, at least for the time being”. She is one of the scientists who is working on this project for more than a decade.
Most importantly, these ‘colored’ varieties are not just visibly attractive but also very healthy. These varieties are rich in anthocyanins, which is presented in normal wheat but in very little amount.
