India’s great diplomatic step toward UNSC table! 55 Asian-Pacific countries affirm India’s bid for non-permanent seat in UNSC

Most significance of this event is this development happened after few days after PM Modi attended the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. PM Modi held several bilateral meetings with China, Russia among other countries on the sidelines of the SCO Summit.
 
United Nations, Jun 26: India’s candidature for UNSC is long bid in the international spectrum. In the last few years, the murmur around this candidature increased. Now, making the more concrete foundation for this bid, 55 countries of the Asian-Pacific group at the United Nations with one accord backed India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for a two-year term in 2021-22.
 
The announcement was made by Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the UN.
 
 
 
 
For this unanimous support from members of Asia-Pacific group on the international platform, Syed Akbaruddin, India's permanent representative at the UN thanked and said in a tweet, "A unanimous step. Asia-Pacific Group @UN unanimously endorses India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for a 2-year term in 2021/22. Thanks to all 55 members for their support."
 
In the past, India has been a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for seven terms: 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92 and 2011-12.
 
In the last month, India had launched its campaign to acquire a non-permanent seat at UNSC for the period of next two year at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the capital of Kyrgyzstan last month.
 
Former EAM Sushma Swaraj had asked for the support of SCO countries for India's candidature for non-permanent membership of the UNSC. Sushma Swaraj had said, “The SCO must support the member countries’ candidatures for the non-permanent membership of the UNSC for the years 2021-2022 and 2027-2028".
