New Delhi, July 24: Indian Railways has proved that it doesn’t work for profit but for the true service of passengers! In a recent step, the Ministry of Railways has provided a new facility of foldable ramps for easy boarding of elderly, seek or handicapped passengers thereby making their journey more and more easier.
The ministry has informed that the new facility has been made available on experimental basis at Bhubaneshwar, Guntur and some other stations. When the train halts, these ramps these ramps can be unfolded joining the compartment door and the platform and elderly or handicapped people can easily board the train by wheelchair and take their seat.
“We have specially designed a ramp to facilitate the movement of the wheelchair from the platform to inside the coach. People are very satisfied with this facility. Earlier it was a problem to enter the coach and to get down the platform. Now, many people are expressing their happiness with these wheelchairs," said D. Vasudev Reddy, Senior Manager, IRTS, (Guntur).
A foldable ramp weighs around 35kg and is easily portable due to Telescopic Adjustable Wheels. Considering the safety of the passenger, Safety Locks also have been attached to the ramp. The ramp can carry the weight up to 250kg.
Now the Ministry is focusing on making these ramps available on most of the railway stations in India.
