While there have been more than around 74,000 corona cases worldwide, the vast majority of those have been reported in mainland China. But what is corona virus illness? What are the symptoms caused by? Is it rapidly rolling out in India and other corners of the world? Is there any booster shot availabe? Too many questions, right? Take it easy! Here is leaflet explaining you all the angles of the virus outbreak in deets:

What is corona virus?

The tale here dates back a month ago when a cluster of pneumonia cases were dicovered in China's Wuhan premises. However, the country and later the world at large realised its seriousness after the first unnatural death was reported on the grounds of this unknown virus group. While the doctors had and yet have nothing to blame, the some expert investigations have found that it was caused by a previously 'unknown' virus, now named 'Novel Corona Virus', which is a large virus community consisting of a core of genetic material surrounded by an envelope with protein spikes.

To note, there are different types of Corona viruses that cause respiratory and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms where respiratory diseases can range from the common cold to pneumonia (in most people the symptoms tend to be mild). However there are some types of Corona viruses that can cause severe disease too. These include the SARS-COV (Severe acute respiratory syndrome- Corona Virus), first identified in China in 2003 and MERS-COV (Middle east respitory syndrome- Corona Virus), first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. While the Covid-19, 'Novel Corona Virus' was first identified in China, the disease has since then spread from those who were sick to others including family members and healthcare staff.

What are the symptoms this coronavirus causes?

The virus initially can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. While in some severe cases there can be organ failure, there is no antibiotics for Covid-19 as of now. Also the antiviral drugs the doctors have against flu are incapable to fight against. However, the health recovery depends on the strength of the immune system.

Is the virus being transmitted from one person to another?

China’s national health commission has confirmed human-to-human transmission, and there have been such transmissions elsewhere. However, the exact Dynamics of how the virus transmitted is yet to be determined.

Is the outbreak a pandemic?

A pandemic, as WHO terms, is the worldwide spread of a disease. Coronavirus cases have been confirmed outside China, but by no means in all 195 countries on the WHO’s list. It is also not spreading within those countries at the moment, except in a very few cases. By far the majority of cases are travellers who picked up the virus in China, as reported by the National Health Commission.

Seven important measures to prevent coronavirus epidemic-

While India is monitoring the new coronavirus outbreak at the highest level to prevent the epidemic, the country has reported three confirmed cases in the state of Kerala, out of more than 2,300 people tested around the country as of Thursday.

1) Covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

2) Avoid close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms, maintaining a distance of at least 1 metre

3) Wear a mask immediately and report to the nearest medical facility as advised.

4) Clean hands with soap and water or alchohol-based hand rub.

5) Avoid unnecessary and unprotected contact with animals.

6) Stay in home isolation for 14 days after travelling, sleeping in a separate room, limiting contact with other family members and avoiding visitors.

7) Not panic.

The spread of the virus outside China is worrying but not an unexpected development. The WHO has declared the outbreak to be a public health emergency of international concern. However, viruses that spread easily tend to have a milder impact. So, nothing to be afraid of! Happy Life, Healthy life!
