Secunderabad, February 24: "Policeman means people’s friend. Image of Indian police need to be improved further", noted Vice President M Venkhaiah Naidu, asking the Police forces to be alert and vigilant against security threats. Addressing the closing ceremony of the 20th All India Police Band Competition in Secunderabad yesterday, he said that forces inimical to India are trying to create disturbance in country.

“Our neighbouring country is promoting and abetting terrorism and some people are encouraging the violence”, he cautioned and asked the people and Police to foil such evil designs. Expressing need to further improve the image of Indian police, Naidu called for measures to make policing more people-centric.
 
"Police station is the first point of contact for people in distress and Policemen should be seen as people’s friend in such a situation", he said emphasising that "any person who wants to seek police help should not hesitate to go to a police station". This is necessary to ensure that public confidence in the system was always maintained, he added.
Stating that smart policing is the need of hour, Naidu called for modernizing police forces by embracing technology and innovative approaches to tackle the crimes involving technology. He wanted all the Police personnel to be trained in fields such as forensics, cyber crimes and online frauds. In this regard, he welcomed the India’s umbrella scheme of “Modernisation of Police Forces (MPF)” aimed at supporting police forces for weapons, Forensics equipment, Information Technology, Communication, Training.
On the occasions, the Vice President lauded the services of all police forces in maintaining law and order in the country, and also for protecting the country from internal threats. He also asked the police forces to keep physically fit by practicing sports and Yoga. Describing many benefits of Yoga for forces, he said that Yoga relieves stress, provides succour and prepares you mentally to face any eventuality in life.
 
Naidu further signed off appreciating the India Police Sports Control Board for organizing the annual event and said that such events would foster cohesion and goodwill amongst participants and generate camaraderie and solidarity within the police fraternity.
