A political quake in Madhya Pradesh

The fast developments unfolding in Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh have indications in them for the future course of events. The open rebellion by Jyotiradiya Scindia, a Congress Stalwart and a close confidante of ‘young’ Congress ‘President-in-Waiting’ Rahul Gandhi painted a very poor and pathetic picture of how such important leaders are neglected by the top brass of the Congress party.

Scindia was not alone to leave Congress; along with him 22 Congress MLAs including six ministers of Kamal Nath Cabinet have put in their papers thus reducing the Congress Government in that Central Indian state to a minority. It will be well-nigh difficult for Chief Minister Kamal Nath to prove the majority on the floor of the House when the
budget session starts.

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Jyotiraditya Scindia resigned from the primary membership of the Congress party. 13 MLAs and 6 ministers who belonged to his camp too have put in their papers to the Governor.

In a face saving attempt the Congress high command ‘expelled’ Scindia for his anti-party activities and for breach of discipline. Fine. But no one is going to take a very serious cognizance of the party’s ‘disciplinary action’ against Scindia.

How the exit of such a top leader will affect the Congress?

Jyotiraditya Scindia was considered as a leader of that caliber who has the expertise and political acumen to run the party besides the ‘traditional leaders’ of the Congress. He was like his father late Madhavrao Scindia who was very close to the then Congress President and Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi but had left the party to form a new regional outfit. Like his father the young scion of the Scindia family also has friends in all the parties. He could have been groomed to be the leader of the Congress party but that did not happen for the obvious strategy of Rahul Gandhi who seriously lacked the political experience and expertise to run a political party. “I will not do anything and will not allow others to do” is the guiding principle of this ‘Sonianandan’. This attitude has made young and promising leaders like Jyotiradiyta Scindia or Sachin Pilot of Rajasthan the real victims.

Later Wednesday after Scindia was formerly admitted to the BJP in presence of party national President J P Nadda, Dr Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other senior leaders, he candidly admitted that he was feeling ‘neglected’ and ‘suffocated’ in the Congress party.

“Our objective was ‘Jansewa’ (Service to People) and politics was the means to accomplish that objective”, Scindia said addressing the reporters at BJP headquarters. He said he was pained and sorry to observe that this objective could not be accomplished by remaining in the Congress party. The party has refused to accept the ground reality and it has brought in an atmosphere of stagnancy within the party, he added.

The party has refused to accept the emerging leadership and glowing example of this is the way the governance in MP was conducted by the Kamal Nath Government, he said.

Scindia scion said that two dates- 30th September 2003 when he lost his fatherand 10th March 2020 his father’s 75th birth anniversary -have changed his life. He accepted that BJP was the ‘Only party that is dedicated to service of Bharat Mata and development and progress of the Indian people.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J P Nadda for giving him a chance to serve the country and its people and to take the country to prosperity. Earlier, welcoming Scindia into the BJP, Nadda said that the BJP had a long relationship with Scindia family since the days of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia. With the entry of Jyotiraditya Scindia this bond has further been cemented. He will prove to be an asset for the party, he said. BJP is the truly democratic party and every individual has the enough opportunity to prove his metal in the service of the motherland, Nadda said.

Barring the Madhavrao Scindia, all the members of the Scindia Family are associated with the BJP. Starting from Rajmata Vijayaraje who joined the erstwhile Jan Sangh in 1967 and was one of the founder members of the BJP and remained so till her death. She was also actively associated with Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Sri Ramjanmabhumi Movement.

Her son Madhavrao Scindia too joined the BJP but for a short time. He later switched to Congress and was very close to Rajiv Gandhi. He wand Rajesh Pilot were two trusted lieutenants of Rajiv Gandhi who had very unfortunate death. His son Jyotiradiyta remained in the Congress for 18 years but left it as the most disillusioned leader and joined the BJP.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje also belonged to the Scindia family. Her son, Dushyant Singh is the BJP MP from Rajasthan and her younger sister Yashodhara Raje is MLA in MP Vidhan Sabha. With Jyotiraditya’s entry into the BJP, the entire Scindia family has established its association with the nationalist party.
