New Delhi, April 13: Doordarshan National came to the limelight in this coronavirus crisis by bringing back its iconic classic programs like Ramayana, Mahabharat, Shaktimaan, etc to keep the people entertained. However, the public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has now launched a channel 'DD Retro' to relive the nostalgia memorable serials.
DD retro will, as of now, broadcast serials like mythological epics Ramayana and Mahabharat, historical drama Chanakya and superhero series Shaktimaan. The list also features comedy-drama Shriman Shrimati, detective show Byomkesh Bakshi, drama show 'Hum Hain Na' and Shah Rukh Khan’s 'Circus'.
The decision comes after Doordarshan emerged as the most-watched channel of India with its viewership topping the charts and beating all other Hindi-centric channels. The viewership of the channel was reported to spike the highest and beat any other genre in the Hindi-speaking markets at times when the epic Ramayana is aired.
Ramayan broke all the TRP records as it garnered a massive viewership and started trending on social media. These shows were brought back on public demand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Apart from DD National, DD Bharati had also seen a huge spike in viewership thanks to the re-telecast of Mahabharat. According to week 13 BARC data for 2+ HSM, Ramayan on DD National has notched 545.8 million impressions while Mahabharat has garnered 145.8 million impressions on DD Bharati.
