Mahatma Gandhi’s statue outside Indian Embassy in Washington DC vandalized

Washington DC, June 04: In the midst of ongoing protests in the US, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been vandalized with graffiti and spray paint outside the Indian Embassy in Washington DC by a group of unidentified people of unruly Black Lives Matter protesters.

A probe into the matter has been launched by the United States Park Police into the matter. The incident is reported to have taken place on the intervening night of June 2 and 3. The officials of the Indian embassy informed the State Department and registered a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies.
 
Meanwhile, after this incident, the US Ambassador to India Ken Juster has apologized for the desecration of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the United States. Juster has said that he is appalled by both on the killing of George Floyd and the 'awful' violence and vandalism that has began in name of protests thereafter. He also assured that the US administration stands against prejudice and discrimination of any type, while also extending his 'sorry' to India.
 
The statue was inaugurated in 2000 in front of the Indian Embassy in Massachusetts Avenue. It is designed by artist Gautam Pal. Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had inaugurated the statue in September 2000 in the presence of the then US President Bill Clinton.
 
Following the incident, protesters have taken to the streets across the country to protest against police brutality and racial injustice. Some of the protesters have also resorted to violence and looting. In several American cities, violent rioters and looters have been running rampage, destroying public and private properties.
 
Several public monuments have been damaged and vandalized too. Protestors have taken to streets in Paris, Sydney, and in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and New Zealand besides others, to express anger against Floyd's death.
 
 
 
In Washington DC, protesters this week burnt a church and damaged some of the prime properties and historic places like the national monument and Lincoln Memorial. Massive protests have erupted not just in the US, but across the globe to express outrage over the death of George Floyd in the US The 46-year-old George Floyd had died while being restrained by Minneapolis police.
 
A video went viral in which a white police officer is seen kneeling on Floyd's neck despite Floyd's continuous plea stating that he could not breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter and is scheduled to appear in court this week. The initial protests against police brutality and racism in various cities in the United States were soon replaced by incidents of violence across the country.
