Manoj Sinha Appointed as new J&K Lieutenant Governor

Srinagar, Aug 6: Former Union Telecom Minister and Senior BJP leader Manoj Sinha has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Jammu and Kashmir by President Ram Nath Kovind a day after Gireesh Chandra Murmu resigned from the post.

This comes after the President accepted the resignation of Gireesh Chandra Murmuas as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir after he resigned from the LG post after serving nine months as the first LG of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
 
 
"The President has been pleased to appoint Shri Manoj Sinha, to be the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office vice Shri Girish Chandra Murmu," said a statement released by President Kovind's office.
 
Sinha was Minister of Communications (independent charge) and Minister of State (MoS), Railways during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first term. He was a BHU student union president leader and has won the Lok Sabha elections twice from Ghazipur in eastern UP. Meanwhile, he had lost the 2019 general elections from the Ghazipur constituency to BSP’s Afzal Ansari.
 
 
Murmu was Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was taken oath as the first Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on October 31, 2019, after the erstwhile state's special status was revoked last year under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. Before being appointed L-G, Murmu was the Expenditure Secretary in the Union Ministry of Finance. There is a report that he is going to be the next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
