Why Am I Like This – Main Aisa Kyun?

I am sure, on odd days, Prashant Bhushan may be singing this famous song – “Main aisa kyun, main waisa kyun hun?” That is, why am I like this? Many of this generation may not be aware that Shanti Bhushan, Prashant’s father was a leading fighter against Emergency who worked closely with RSS and was also a Law Minister in short lived Janata Party government of 1977. He was always a positive fighter for justice. His son has specialised now, in spreading negativity and supporting Breaking India forces, euphemistically called Tukde Tukde gangs. He is a thriving lawyer, otherwise, who is earning quite well; though he had to raise a loan of One Rupee from his bellicose colleague.

Why is it that Prashant has links with most ultra-Left organisations, many of whom don’t even have faith in Indian judicial system? Most of the 50 people he follows on Twitter are the grand daddys or friends of Breaking India forces. Like Harsh Mandar, Jignesh Mewani, Kanhaiyya Kumar, Kavita Krishnan, Shehla Rashid or rabid anti-Hindu Islamists like RJ Sayma, Rana Ayyub, Teesta Setalvad or implacable Modi haters like Kunal Kamra and Sitaram Yechuri etc.

Prashant’s is most passionate when it comes to support anti-India forces. For example he wanted referendum in Jammu and Kashmir, though as a lawyer he knows that unless Pakistan fulfilled its obligation as per the UNSC resolution, no referendum was possible. He has been accusing Indian army of human rights violations as if victims and defenders of India’s integrity have no human rights. He forgets that for Pakistan, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh are the jugular vein. Pakistan’s existence is based on two nation theory which this region of India disproves. So, his support to separatists is turns into a support to Pakistan. He comes from woolly headed school of thought that believes that terror is an outcome of security forces’ atrocities and not due to certain ideology. Why is he naïve like Bollywood film makers, or this too is deliberate?

The PIL expert Prashant is so compassionate for terrorists that he woke up the courts in the midnight to present a petition to save Yakub Memon. He tried hard to save Ajmal Kasab as well as Mohammad Afzal. Why does his milk of humanity overflow only for terrorists who kill Indians and damage India? I don’t recall any PIL for justice to victims of series of bomb attacks by terrorists. Ye vakil babu aisa kyun hai?

His heart bleeds for Naxals and Urban Naxals. He claimed that Naxals killed 76 CRPF jawans to take revenge on the security forces. So, security forces were the cause of entire Naxal movement! Veteran Maoists who trained these anti-democratic forces would turn in their graves if they heard this reasoning. I am not sure, but I am told he demanded plebiscite even in Naxal dominated areas! What’s wrong with him? It seems that Left company dumbs down your intellect. Ye, waisa kyun hai, that he turned silent when a girl in Naxal belt was killed for daring to go to school?

His compassion turns him into a bully in the courts to get his way using his senior lawyer tag to browbeat judges. He had been quite successful so far, but he is frustrated that his writ doesn’t run anymore. Recall how the then CJI Gogoi had advised him once to see something positive atleast once in a while. Remember his tweet on 21st April that he is “witnessing a state of Emergency in Supreme Court. It has surrendered itself to the government.” It was the time when courts had begun hearing his petition on migrant labour during Corona crises. He is a perpetually angry crusader without a pause. He mindlessly criticised CJI Bobde who was astride a fancy bike that was on clearly visible side stand, in front of the showroom selling that bike! Why can’t a CJI have a little fun, bhai?

‘Why I he like this’ was manifest again when he criticised broadcasting Ramayan and Mahabharat during first lockdown, calling it marijuana for the common people while labour suffered walking miles to reach home. Excuse me bhai, what was the connection? While he and his friends were raging in studios, RSS swayamsevaks – symbol of bad Hindu for him – were serving the migrant labour across highways! This lawyer has a problem with Hinduism and Hindus. He has made objectionable comments about Hindu Gods, and Hindu scriptures. What is his problem? His hate for saffron made him go wild against Baba Ramdev. Finally, he had to remove his tweet and apologise to Baba Ramdev. His heart may be on the right side but his head is on the left with nothing left there, it seems.

His friendship with anti-development lobbies saw him supporting anti-Narmada dam groups. After losing the case, he made a distasteful comment, “Every person in the country, including judges, is entitled to have a view on these matters. What is disturbing is when such personal views are delivered as the judgment of a court. Equally distressing is the fact that such pronouncements have been made without any evidence of the facts [being presented] before the judges." Wallah! So, an evidence is an evidence and a judgement is a judgement only if it favours our great Vakeel babu!

Prashant Bhushan’s anti-development feelings run deep. He was also part of the groups, including Church toadies, who forced the closure of Vedanta’s copper plant in Tamil Nadu on flimsy grounds, resulting in heavy loss to the nation as this plant was producing nearly 40% of India’s copper requirement. His foray into Kejriwal type politics resulting in a disaster should have cured him of his self-deluding image of grandeur. He should have realised that tilting against every windmill may get him a khujli parasite on his back who will only suck his blood but offer nothing in return. It should have told him to steer clear of hypocrites and fake crusaders. But, alas, he didn’t learn his lessons.

I can go on and on about his distinguished career that makes one sigh and say, ‘yeh aisa kyun hai!’ He had claimed that he would rather follow Gandhi ji and go to jail rather than admit to any Contempt of Court. But, by paying a symbolic fine of 1/- he admitted to his crime to avoid jail sentence. It shows that all the bravado was fine only till his friends were in the government. Fear of jail cured him of his haughty posturing of a Gandhian. He knows his filibuster won’t work anymore. May God bless him with some sanity atleast now on. Alas! But, for this he has to first come out of his claustrophobic neo-Left world view.
