New Delhi, January 20: "Its rich in antioxidants, its naturally fat free and high in fibre..", PM Modi had once said in his 'Mann ki Baat' address. And the country will soon know the fruit as 'Kamalam'- earlier named as original, the Dragon Fruit. Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani on Wednesday moved up changing the name of Dragon Fruit in Gujarat as Kamalam. "As the outer shape of the fruit resembles a lotus, hence Dragon Fruit shall be renamed as Kamalam," the Chief Minister was quoted saying yesterday.

Kamalam, the new name itself suggests that it comes from general assumptions that the fruit somehow looks like a Lotus. Lotus, which is also a party symbol of the ruling party in India, Rupanni said that the the name of Dragon Fruit is associated with China and that they had to change it anyhow. According to the Chief Minister, the Gujarat government has already applied for a patent to rename the exotic fruit, which is mostly imported from South America but is now grown in several states.

Dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya or strawberry pear, is a tropical fruit known for its vibrant red skin and sweet, seed-speckled pulp. Its unique look and acclaimed superfood powers have made it popular among foodies and the health-conscious. The fruit contains multiple antioxidants that are beneficial for good health. It also contains many vitamins and minerals that are important for a healthy body.

Over the past few years, the Dragon Fruit has become a popular addition to the diet in the country and has emerged as a money spinner for farmers in Gujarat, mainly in Bhuj, Gandhidham and Mandvi. PM Modi back in the month of July had shared a word to the farmers for growing Kamalam in India and giving a boost to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan'.
