Watch: PM Modi leads nation in paying tribute to martyrs at National War Memorial

New Delhi, Jan 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to the fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial at the India Gate on Republic Day 2021. India is celebrating its 72nd Republic Day today.

PM Modi was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen Bipin Rawat, Indian Army chief Gen MM Naravane, Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh and Indian Air Force Chief (IAF) Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria were also present there. Later, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries drove to the saluting dais.
 
The Guard Commander gave salute while bugles sounded the ‘Last Post’. The officers in uniform saluted and others were stood in attention. After the ‘Last Post’, a two-minute silence was observed.
 
The buglers sounded the ‘Rouse’ and the Guard Commander ordered “Salami Shastra” Salute with arms, to mark the completion of the two-minute silence.
 
 
India's military might, cultural diversity, social and economic progress are on display during the 72nd Republic Day celebrations at the majestic Rajpath in the national capital today. Apart from tableaus of Armed forces, 17 tableaus from different states and nine tableaus from different ministries and departments of the Central government and Paramilitary Forces and six from Ministry of Defence will also be on display during the annual parade.
 
Owing to the Covid-19 crisis, this will be the first Republic Day in 50 years when there will be no chief guest. This year, Republic Day celebration is witnessing several firsts, including shorter route for the parade, fewer spectators, no chief guest, no motorcycle stunts, no bravery awards, smaller marching contingents, no children below 15 and elderly with comorbidities in the annual parade.
 
The ceremony culminated with the national anthem and the release of tri-colour balloons.
