New Delhi, October 11: A day before the Group of 20 (G20) Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with his British counterpart Boris Johnson and agreed on the need for a coordinated global approach to engagement with the Taliban.

Apart from the Afghanistan situation, the two leaders also took stock of India-UK trade and defence talks, opening up international travel between the two countries and climate action targets in the lead up to the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
 
Issuing the statement, Downing Street said, " Both the leaders talked about the current situation in Afghanistan. They agreed on the need for a coordinated international approach to engagement with the Taliban, emphasising the importance of upholding human rights in the country.”

According to the statement issued by the UK, Johnson underlined the importance of making concrete progress on climate change ahead of and at the upcoming COP26 Summit. "He noted that India already leads the world in renewable technology and expressed his hope that they will commit to a more ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution and to achieving Net Zero emissions," it added.
 
It should be noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to virtually participate in the Group of 20 (G20) Extraordinary Leaders’ Summit on Afghanistan scheduled to be held on Tuesday. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will also be a part of this virtual conference.
