Death toll due to flash floods, landslides rises to 38 in Kerala; rescue operations on

Alappuzha, October 19: The death toll due to heavy rainfall has triggered devastating landslides and flash floods in south-central districts of the Kerala state have been now rosed to 38. This includes the 24 people who lost their lives who died in the landslide-hit Koottickal in Kottayam district and Idukki district in Kerala.

Three persons from Malappuram, two each from Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kannur, one each from Kollam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, and Palakkad lost their lives in various rain-related incidents in Kerala.
 
 
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said 38 persons have lost their lives from October 12 to 18 in various rain-related incidents that had occurred across Kerala. "Since October 12, 38 persons have lost their lives. This includes 13 from Koottickal in Kottayam and 11 from Idukki in the landslides," an SDMA official said.
 
 
 
As per the reports of SDMA, at least 90 houses have been destroyed in rains since October 12, while 702 houses were partially damaged.

Moreover, the two shutters of Idamalayar Dam in Ernakulam district opened for 50 cm each at 6 am today. The present water level of the dam is 165.70 m with the full reservoir level being 169 m & the maximum water level being 171 m. A 'blue alert' has been sounded for Idamalayar Dam due to the rise in water level, the State's Department of Information and Public Relations said.
 
Meanwhile, Health Department has issued an alert against leptospirosis outbreaks as rain and related floods are likely to continue in the State in the days to come.
