Balrampur, December 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Saryu Canal National Project, on Saturday. It aims to provide water for irrigation to more than 14 lakh hectares of land, to benefit 29 lakh farmers in the Uttar Pradesh area.
Speaking at the occasion, PM Modi lashed out at the opposition, claiming that “their mindset” had stalled work on the key project. He also expressed his condolences to the families of the 13 people who died in an Indian Air Force chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8.
The Saryu Canal National Project for irrigation in UP, has been completed at a cost of more than Rs. 9,800 crores. It involves interlinking of 5 rivers, namely, Ghaghara, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga and Rohini - to ensure optimum usage of water resources in this region.
According to an official government statement, work on this project started in 1978 but due to “lack of continuity of budgetary support, interdepartmental coordination and adequate monitoring,” it got delayed and wasn’t completed. In 2016, the project was brought under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana with the target to complete it at the latest.
