They said that information about the attack on the police and the man being killed were being verified. "If it appears to be murder then FIR to be registered accordingly," the Jalandhar Inspector General of Police was quoted as saying. He added that people's sentiments had been running high after the Golden Temple incident.

"As it was a sensitive issue, police used restraint. Those people who managed to do this were more in number than the police," he added. Notably, the second clash came on Sunday, with a man being beaten to death, allegedly for disrespecting the 'Nishan Sahib' (Sikh religious flag) at a gurdwara in Nizampur village. Residents had claimed that he disrespected the sacred flag and tried to run away from the spot.

The incident took place mere hours after a man was beaten to death at the Golden Temple in Amritsar for attempting sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib. The Punjab government has said that a special investigative team had been constituted and would sumbit a report within two days.
