Chasing a target an improbable 482-run target on a difficult pitch, England was hoping for a miracle with the Day 4 starting 53/3. However, adding misery to the visitors, Indian spinners again shined and got rid of the four batsmen including dangerous Ben Stokes, in the opening session to leave England struggling at 116 for seven at lunch on day four. English batsmen struggled to counter the spin challenge posed by the home bowlers.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin first sent back Dan Lawrence (26) and then removed Stokes (8) to add to the misery of the visitors. On the other hand, Axar Patel enticed a lofted sweep from Ollie Pope (12), who was caught by Ishant Sharma, and another wicket fell down with Axar dismissing Olly Stone. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav got his first wicket when he had Ben Foakes (2) caught by Patel. Following this, he dismissed Moeen Ali, who has hitting fours and sixes.

After India chose to bat in the second Test, Rohit Sharma scored a century which added much of relief for Team India. It was all Ashwin's spin that sucked the momentum of the visitors. In the second innings, when India was struggling for having a stable partnership, skipper Kohli, along with Ashwin took the hosts to set a target of 482.
