New Delhi, Mar 6: In yet another major blow to Trinamool Congress ahead of West Bengal Assembly polls, Dinesh Trivedi has resigned as TMC MP in Rajya Sabha on February 12, joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of the party's national president JP Nadda on Saturday.

Trivedi, who represented West Bengal in Rajya Sabha for the third time and was a former railway minister, announced his resignation in the house during a debate on the Union Budget, saying he cannot speak about the violence in his state.

"This is the golden moment for me, for which I have been waiting for a long time. Nadda ji and my friends knew I was waiting for this. I never left ideology. The nation was above everything for me. Every person believes that PM Narendra Modi and BJP will keep the nation secure," Trivedi said.
 
 
 
While announcing his resignation in the Rajya Sabha, Trivedi had said he was feeling suffocated. He also raked up the issue of violence in Bengal, which is also being raised by the BJP. Quoting Swami Vivekananda's 'Arise, awake', the MP had said, "My inner voice is telling me that if I can't do anything for my state sitting here, it's better I leave this chair. I am resigning from Rajya Sabha today. There is violence happening in my state. We cannot speak anything here."

He had also praised PM Modi saying, "The world was looking at India during the Covid-19 pandemic. India's fight against Covid-19 has been successful. PM Modi said the credit goes to 130 crore Indians, but the fight was helmed by him."
 
Several TMC leaders including Jitendra Tiwari, Suvendu Adhikari had earlier joined the BJP in the run up to Assembly elections
 
West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in eight phases starting from March 27 with the final round of voting taking place on April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2. Besides, West Bengal is likely to witness a triangular contest this time with TMC, Congress-Left alliance and the BJP in the fray.
