'Their courage, heroism gives strength to every Indian': PM Modi pays tributes to Jallianwala Bagh massacre victims

New Delhi, April 13: Paying tribute to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre victims on the 102nd anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "their courage, heroism, and sacrifice give strength to every Indian." 

 

 

 

"Tributes to those martyred in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Their courage, heroism, and sacrifice give strength to every Indian," PM Modi said.

 

 

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre is one of the most heart-wrenching historic events for India, it is a key point in the history of India’s independence struggle. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, took place on April 13, 1919, when thousands of unarmed Indians were killed mercilessly in Jallianwala Bagh by Acting Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer.

 

 

The colonial troops entered Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab's Amritsar and blocked the main entrance behind them to ensure nobody could flee before opening fire on the crowd for about 10 minutes. The British Indian Army volleyed around 1,650 rounds of bullets injuring over 1,000 people and killing over 400.

 

After the incident, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer was removed from his post and was named "the Butcher of Amritsar". Jallianwala Bagh is also considered a turning point in the Indian freedom struggle, with its focus shifting from seeking better conditions for the native population to full independence.
