India to participate in G20 in person; Jaishankar to travel Italy

New Delhi, June 15: External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will be attending Group 20 Foreign Ministers meeting, which is scheduled to take place in Italy. According to the reports, S Jaishankar will visit Italy's Matera on 29th June. It should be noted that Italy is the host of the G20 grouping this year and will hold the leader's summit in Rome on October 30th and 31st. The G20 FMs meet will see the participation of FM of other countries as well. China, Russia, the US, UK, France, and others are part of the grouping and naturally, this will provide an occasion for several bilateral meetings as well.

The G20 nations comprise 19 nations along with European Union. These 19 include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
 
Last year G20 under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia held its meetings, including the leaders meet virtually amid the Covid pandemic.

 
Last year G20 meeting was held virtual, due to the coronavirus pandemic that had sent countries into lockdown. Last year Jaishankar had proposed developing global standards on the movement of people. It had three main elements- standards on testing procedures and universal acceptability of test results, quarantine procedures.

 
Jaishankar had last visited Rome in 2019 and took part in the 5th edition of the Mediterranean Dialogues. The conference was attended by more than 40 world leaders.
 
India is scheduled to host the Group of 20 Summit in 2023, a year later than what was decided earlier.
