The crossing is the second busiest entry point and it is one of the major international border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The crossing links Kandahar with Pakistani ports and around 900 trucks cross the border through the crossing every day.

Following the incident, Pakistan has closed down its all key border crossing with Afghanistan in Balochistan. Chaman Assistant Commissioner Arif Kakar confirmed to the media that the Friendship Gate crossing at the Chaman border with Afghanistan has been closed.

It was the third border crossing the insurgents have taken in the past weeks after previously it took a string of major Afghan border crossings, including with Iran, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

It should be noted that the Taliban is intensifying their hold within the country since the US and NATO troops stepped up their withdrawal from the war-battered country. Last week Taliban took control of areas in Herat, Farah, and Kunduz provinces. Last week, the Taliban said they now control 85% of Afghanistan’s territory.
