New Delhi, July 16: Film Industry's one of the finest and three-time national award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri, passed away on Friday morning in Mumbai. The actress suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this morning. She was 75. She was popularly known for her role in 'Balika Vadhu.'
She had been unwell for several months and had suffered a brain stroke in 2020. Surekha first suffered a brain stroke in 2018 while she was shooting in Mahabaleshwar. The actress fell in the bathroom and hit her head, which caused her brain stroke.
Born in Uttar Pradesh, she graduated from the National School of Drama (NSD) in 1971. She also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989. The actor’s father was in the Air Force and her mother was a teacher. She married Hemant Rege and they have a son together, Rahul Sikri.
Surekha Sikri made her debut with a political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka in 1978. She had essay supporting roles in numerous Hindi and Malayalam films, as well as TV serials. However, she grabbed many eyeballs for her performance in the primetime soap opera Balika Vadhu. She had played role of Kalyani Devi, aka Dadisa. She was last seen in Zoya Akhtar's segment of the OTT anthology film "Ghost Stories" that was released earlier last year.
The veteran actress has won three national awards for her roles in the films "Tamas", "Mammo" and "Badhaai Ho". She also has won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Role in the film Badhaai Ho. Apart from these, she has also received the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 2011 for Balika Vadhu. In addition, she won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 for her contributions towards Hindi theater.
