Photos and videos may be taken using the glasses' tiny camera and sent immediately to your phone. Music and phone calls may be made using the tiny speakers integrated into the devices.

Users may "stay present with friends, family, and the world around you," Facebook says of the new feature. So far, just a few IT giants have entered the market for smart glasses, which is still in their infancy. "Google Glass" was introduced by Google in 2014 but was immediately pulled following widespread criticism.

Snap's "Spectacles" came out two years later. Despite the early interest, the social media company eventually wrote off $40 million in unsold products.

Facebook claims that the glasses were "built with privacy in mind" on its website. A Facebook-funded group, Future of Privacy Forum, employs "independent" privacy experts, according to Ryan Mac of The New York Times. Growing its product line has been a priority for Facebook since the launch of Oculus Quest and Oculus Go headsets, which have been a disappointment. As a result of the virtual reality gadgets, Mark Zuckerberg said the Oculus Quest is currently exceeding expectations.
