Hold Your Bonds Close to Your Heart

Bright

Please allow me to be a bit naughty. I was coming back from Command canteen Pune. Suddenly I met a retired senior officer, holding a big bag with his monthly consumption inside.

He was holding in such a way that it was looking bit clumsy to me. So, I asked him-why you are holding these bottles like this.

He replied “I am holding these bottles tightly, otherwise these will rattle against each other as I move and may break down, spreading the smell all around. It is just a matter of 100 meters till I take my vehicle. Last time I lost some bottles so I am bit more careful this time.”

I appreciated his point.

What used to happen when we had joint family in our society?
There used to be more than 30 family members, how they used to run these family? Of course, there were frictions and troubles so many times but overall scenario was quite good. There used to be a ‘Head of the Family’, usually the eldest one and he used to listen to every body and give his decisions. Sometimes it used to happen that he had to forego the rights of his own family members for the sake of family unity but overall, this structure held together and life was pretty good with mutual support, love and affection through joint feasts, daily get togethers, meetings and family functions. By any chance if the “Head of Family” was partial, biased or incompetent or selfish, things used to fall apart with the loss of control which basically depended upon trust of family members amongst themselves. Now, it is so difficult to hold the nuclear family even, as the children grow up, they are on their own.

How to do it in organisations?

You have some hard nuts in your team, hold them tightly, even if it is small distance, alternatively you can put the cushion around each one of them (System, process, mentor) but ensure that they do not rattle against each other.

I took my lessons.

What about you? Cheers!
