CBI announces reward in murder of BJP worker in West Bengal poll violence

New Delhi, Jan 29: In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation has announced a cash reward against five accused in the murder of BJP worker Abhijeet Sarkar. The five accused have been declared proclaimed offenders by a court.

A reward of Rs 50,000 has been issued against Amit Das, Tumpa Das, Arup Das, Sanjay Barik and Papiya Barik.The murder of Abhijeet Sarkar was among the first case that was taken up for probe by the CBI after the Calcutta High Court ordered the federal probe agency to investigate all cases of poll violence in West Bengal.

The Second postmortem was carried out in July and DNA identification was carried out on the direction of the High Court order. In September, the body was handed over to the family for last rites. On September 30, 2021, the CBI filed a charge sheet against 20 accused in the court of ACJM, Sealdah.
 
The investigation in the Abhijeet case was formally taken up on August 25, 2021. The initial FIR was registered at police station Narkeldanga, Kolkata against 7 or 8 unidentified accused who attacked Abhijeet with sticks and broke household articles.
