Amritsar, Jan 31: It seems, in a fear of losing from his home constituency, the Congress party on Sunday announced that Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will contest from two seats in the upcoming assembly elections. As per the third list released by the Congress party, Channi will contest from Bhadaur.

With that announcement, apart from his traditional home turf of Chamkaur Sahib, Charanjit Singh Channi will also contest elections from Bhadaur. It is said that Channi decided to fight from two seats as he faces a strong contest in Chamkaur Sahib. In the 2017 polls, Punjab CM had won the set by a margin of 12, 308 votes. Aam Adami Party's Dr. Charanjit Singh was the runner-up with 48,752 votes.

Soon after the announcement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal questioned whether his party's survey that predicted Channi's loss from his home constituency was indeed true.

"I had said that according to our survey, Channi Ji is losing from Chamkaur Sahib. Today Congress has announced that it will contest from two seats. Does this mean the survey is true?" he asked.

It should be noted that Bhadaur in Barnala district comes under the Malwa region of Punjab. This region houses 69 Assembly constituencies. The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party is considered dominant in Malwa region. In 2017, AAP’s Pirmal Singh Dhaula won from Bhadaur. The Congress candidate trailed behind both AAP and Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) candidates.

In a similar move, the Congress party had earlier fielded Rahul Gandhi from Amethi and Waynad in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. The ex-Congress chief had lost the traditional turf of Gandhis to Smriti Irani at that time.

The Punjab Assembly election of 2022 will be held on February 20. The votes will be counted on March 10.
