In the most ironic stuff that could ever happen and funny as well, the so-called fact-checkers and founders of alternate media platform Alt News Mohammad Zubair and Pratik Sinha are reportedly among the contenders for the Nobel Peace Prize 2022. According to a list of ‘favorites’ compiled by Time magazine, this duo has been featured on it based on nominations that were made public via Norwegian lawmakers, predictions from bookmakers, and picks from the Peace Research Institute Oslo.
Speaking on similar lines, NDTV and The Wire, of course, went on to claim that Alt News founders are among the contenders for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. NDTV also confirmed that Zubair and Sinha are on the list of 343 candidates in contention for the award this year referencing TIME.
The
TIME piece mentions Zubair and Sinha as nominees in its article. The article referred to a piece from
Reuters but has no mention of the duo the fact-checking duo. It is pertinent to mention that the article in TIME magazine is written by Sanya Mansoor in which she has blatantly lied about them being a nominee for the prize. Though their names are mentioned in the directors of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) shortlist, it is basically a wishlist.
PRIO’s director Henrik Urdal has named the five shortlisted candidates that he thinks would be the best fit to receive the Nobel Prize there are no mentions of the fact-checking duo. However, Urdal has added further that Alt News’s Mohammed Zubair and Pratik Sinha are also worthy candidates for a prize focused on “combating religious extremism and intolerance in India” as they have contributed significantly “to debunking misinformation aimed at vilifying Muslims in India.”
Surprisingly, in this five-list, another Indian Harsh Mander, and his campaign of ‘Karwan-e-Mohabbat’ has been mentioned. In fact, not just been nominated, they have been just shortlisted to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Any person can submit a nomination who meets nomination criteria, however, the names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later.
Notably, the article in for THE TIME was written by a Kashmir-based journalist Sanya Mansoor.
Several netizens also accused the duo or fake news spreaders of carrying a particular agenda and misleading the public through fake news.
Mohammad Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 this year for hurting religious sentiments. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on July 20.
Nonetheless, among other strong contenders are Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. The results of Nobel Peace Prize 2022 will be announced at 11am local time on Friday in Oslo, Norway.
