India invites Egypt's president President Fattah El-Sisi as chief guest for Republic Day 2023

Both the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the country earlier this year. During their visits, both the ministers met the Egyptian President, with Jaishankar handing out a "personal message" of PM Modi to him.

New Delhi, November 25: As part of New Delhi’s efforts to strengthen its political and military ties with Cairo, India has invited Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day on January 26, 2023. Egypt is the 2nd largest economy in Africa. This year, both countries celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Both the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the country earlier this year. During their visits, both the ministers met the Egyptian President, with Jaishankar handing out a "personal message" of PM Modi to him.
 
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar wrote in a tweet, “Honoured to call on President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt. Conveyed the warm greetings of PM @narendramodi and handed over a personal message.”
 
 
 
The country was also invited to the India-Africa Defence Dialogue and IOR Defence Ministers’ Conclave that took place on the sidelines of the 12th DefExpo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in October. There has been one of close cooperation between Indian and Egyptian Air Forces, with efforts at jointly developing a fighter aircraft in the 1960s.
 
IAF pilots also trained Egyptian pilots from the 1960s until 1984. Egypt regularly provides transit facilities to IAF and Indian Navy aircraft ferrying to/ from Russia, Europe and the USA.Egypt is keen on buying India's Tejas fighter jets.
 
 
President Sisi visited India in September 2016. Sisi also met Indian PM Narendra Modi at the Third India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi in October 2015.
 
Since PM Modi became prime minister, India has extended invites to US President Barack Obama (2015), French President Francois Hollande (2016), UAE's Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (2017), all the ASEAN Leaders (2018), South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa (2019) and Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro (2020) to watch the Republic Day parade.
