Vizhinjam, November 28: Violence stirs up in Kerala, after 1,000 people led by the 'Latin Catholic Church' violated the Kerala High Court's order, and brutally attacked the Vizhinijam police station in protest against the construction of the Adani Port. This violence took place after police arrested five people following the protest on November 26.
As many as 29 police officials were injured in the violence after the angry mob attacked them using stones, sticks, and bricks. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. Besides the police officials, the agitators also attacked media personnel who were present at the site.
While giving information about the incident, a special branch police official said, "At least 29 policemen have been injured and admitted to various hospitals." Meanwhile, the state police lodged an FIR against at least 15 Latin Catholic priests, including metropolitan Archbishop Thomas J Netto and Perera, over the violence at Vizhinjam on Saturday.
Following the situation, the Kerala government has deployed more police officials from the other districts. Looking at the sensitive situation, the government has called an all-party meeting in Thiruvananthapuram. Besides, the senior officials, including the district collector, city police commissioner, and sub-collector, have called a reconciliatory meeting with the protesters at the Kovalam animation centre.
Earlier on 26 November, church-backed protestors blocked over twenty trucks from entering the port construction site and stoned a few trucks. The group supporting the port project reached the construction site, and both groups indulged in stone pelting.
Tensions remained high till the trucks were forced to be taken away from the project location.
It should be noted that, on August 29, the state High Court ruled that work at the Vizhinjam Port could not be suspended and that any concerns about the project might be lodged at proper forums.
Protests against the Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Transhipment Deepwater Multipurpose port in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala have been ongoing for some time, with the Catholic Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram taking the lead with fishermen pressing their demands under their leadership.
The protesters’ main demand is that the construction of a Rs 7,525-crore deepwater port and container transhipment facility in Vizhinjam on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram be halted and an environmental impact analysis be conducted.
