Bengaluru, April 04: Amid the ongoing controversy over Halal, the Karanataka government has asked the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike(BBMP) to make it mandatory for all meat shops and slaughterhouses in the city to stun the animals before inhumanly slaughtering them.

The Karnataka government's animal husbandry department has issued a notice regarding this order. Citing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Slaughter House) Rules, 2001, in the notice, it has asked BBMP to direct all slaughterhouses and chicken shops to slaughter the animals only after stunning them.

Further, it has also asked the BBMP to check the stunning facility, while issuing licences for slaughterhouses and chicken shops. It also sought a report on the action being taken by the Bengaluru municipal body.

This comes just after the department received several complaints alleging that the rule is being followed at slaughterhouses. "We have received complaints from people about the stunning procedure not being followed at slaughterhouses and chicken stalls," the department said.

The order from the BBMP comes amidst the ongoing debate over the Islamic traditions of ‘Halal’, which intensified last week after the Hindu activist group Hindu Janajagruti Samiti gave a call to boycott halal meat while launching a nationwide campaign demanding a ban on Halal products.

It should be worth to be noted that stunning animals before slaughter is against the principle of Islam.
