Pakistan appoints "trade minister" in Delhi mission to revive ties with India

With Pakistan battling severe financial crisis, the Shehbaz Sharif cabinet has decided that the position of Trade Minister in India would be reinstated

New Delhi, May 11: In a big development for India-Pakistan relations, Pakistan has decided to take a big step in reviving trade relations with India. In a meeting of the cabinet of newly appointed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, it was decided that the position of Trade Minister in India would be reinstated. It should be noted that Pakistan is battling a severe financial crisis.

It was reported that the appointment of Trade Ministers was approved for 15 countries including India. Such reports come at a time when a "big decision" is expected as PM Shehbaz Sharif set to leave for London to meet his elder brother, PML-N supremo and former PM Nawaz Sharif.
 
 
Reports suggest that Qamar Zaman has been appointed as the trade minister in its High Commission in New Delhi but there has been no official confirmation in this regard. Pakistan’s People’s Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira is reportedly an adviser to new PM Sharif on affairs of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Pakistan under then Prime Minister Imran Khan had ended all trade with India after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in late 2019. The step suggests an inclination by the coalition government to restore trade with India. The last Minister Trade in Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi was Irfan Tarar and the post, as also several others, including that of the High Commissioner, are vacant following a severe downgrading of ties.
