Violence breaks out in Andhra over renaming Konaseema district after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

Several police officers, including the Konsaseema district SP Subba Reddy, sustained injuries on May 24 and many other police officers ran away from the spot as thousands of protesters pelted stones and torched the vehicles.

Amalapuram, May 25: A violent protest broke out in Amalapuram town in the Konaseema district, Andhra Pradesh, over the state government's proposal to rename the district as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.

Reportedly, violence gripped the town of Amalapuram after protestors attacked and torched the house of MLA Ponnada Satish. They also attacked State minister P Viswarup's house and burnt several vehicles, including police vehicles and educational institutions' buses.
 
Several police officers, including the Konsaseema district SP Subba Reddy, sustained injuries on May 24 and many other police officers ran away from the spot as thousands of protesters pelted stones and torched the vehicles. 
 
Soon after the incident, police swung into action and imposed section 144, and suspended the internet service in the area. Apart from that Police have also increased the security and also deployed more than 500 police personnel in the area to maintain peace and harmony.
 
This comes after the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government on May 20 announced to rename Konaseema as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.
 
Trouble escalated on Tuesday when the police allegedly prevented the members of KSS from going into the district Collector’s office for submitting a memorandum against renaming the district and resorted to a lathi charge. As police tried to chase the Samiti leaders and workers away, stone-pelting ensued. The incident of torching of properties and vehicles then followed.
