Whenever I have to do small grocery shopping, I head for a small shop which is run by a Rajasthani family, consisting of husband, wife, daughter and son. Daughter is around 14 years old and son is around 12 years old ... Generally, son is around whenever I go to the shop. Invariably he becomes my first port of call.
I call him by name and he responds immediately, even if there is a bit of crowd on the shop.
I went there at 10 AM last Sunday, owner and his son (13 years old) were at the shop, I gave the order and the boy got me the stuff almost immediately. I have been observing this boy since last three-four transactions and found him energetic, good in calculations with very positive attitude. However, that energy was missing.
" Your son is quite good, lot of potential, give him the opportunity to develop a good career."
" Nobody gets smarter by talking only, my son is good in that only ."
The moment he spoke like this , I could see that the boy got his attention to our conversation .
I got him aside, spoke to him and told him not to let down his son in-front of others, that is a sure shot therapy to demotivate him.
" But I thought it otherwise...."
" Did you see any improvement in him ..you must have done it many times."

" In fact , he is going down …..only". Our sale is going down drastically because of his poor attitude and I am worried about this.
“That is so natural and I am sure you must be doing the same thing in-front of his elder sister also and in family meetings too.”
“He was quite sheepish in accepting this fact as well.”
“You wish to scold him, for the right reason, please do it but on one-to-one basis only, do not let him down Infront of customers or even in family meetings.”
“But in family we discuss everything.”
“Do you scold your daughter as well.”
“No body scolds our daughter; she is so sincere.”
“Family meeting for praise only ……. just remember this. More than that please note that he is a boy .”
He assured me that he is going to abide by my advice.
It took about a month; the boy was back with spring and energy in his stride and father was quite happy. Every time I go to the shop, without my asking …boy brings the cup of tea…. Father insists.
In our corporate functioning, how many times it works. I am sure you never got any positive result with hard approach, may be some short-term progress and that's all.
Letting down your own people …even when you have got right reasons to do, can never get you anywhere, be sure of it …. positive reinforcement is the only key to this lock.
