New Delhi, May 5: India supplied nearly 40,000 MT of petrol to Sri Lanka, on May 4, in order to help ease the fuel shortage raging in the island nation. India so far delivers 440,000 MT of various types of fuels to the crisis struck nation. Lanka is under a severe economic and energy crisis.
The High Commission of India in Colombo made it public through a tweet on May 4 that said, "Delivering on India's commitment to the people of Sri Lanka, close to 40,000 MT of petrol reached Colombo today. With this, Sri Lanka has received around 440,000 MT of various types of fuel from more to follow."
Earlier on May 1, Ceylon Petroleum Private Bowser Owners Association (CPPBOA) warned of fresh fuel shortage from Monday due to the recent anti - govt strikes in the country that had resulted in the suspension of fuel transport operations.

At the same time, reports suggest that Sri Lanka has also sought the supply of fertilizers from India and the deferral of a payment of USD 2.5 billion to the Asian Clearing Union as part of efforts to cope with the island nation’s worst economic crisis in decades. Earlier this year, India had deferred the payment of USD 515 million to the ACU at Sri Lanka’s request. It had also provided a currency swap of USD 400 million under the SAARC facility.
